Former President Donald Trump and House Speaker Mike Johnson pitched new legislation to crack down on noncitizen voting on Friday, despite the fact the practice is already illegal and occurs rarely. It is already a crime to register or vote as a noncitizen in all state and federal elections, though Washington, D.C., and a handful of municipalities in California, Maryland and Vermont allow noncitizen voting in local elections. Many have investigated noncitizen voting and found little evidence of it. The Brennan Center found just 30 suspected noncitizen votes amid 23.5 million votes in 2016, suggesting that suspected noncitizen votes accounted for 0.0001 % of votes cast. But Johnson and Trump have both long advanced baseless claims about election integrity.

CNN —Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis said Saturday that “the train is coming,” referring to her team’s preparation for the case against former President Donald Trump and his 14 co-defendants and whether she was slowed down by attempts to remove her from the case. I do think there are efforts to slow down this train, but the train is coming,” she said while attending an Atlanta-area Easter basket giveaway. On Wednesday, Fulton County Superior Court Judge Scott McAfee granted requests from Trump and his co-defendants to appeal the decision to allow Willis to continue prosecuting the case. Willis said she doesn’t feel as though she needs to rehabilitate her reputation with Fulton County residents, adding, “I’m not embarrassed by anything I’ve done. CNN —A vigil will be held Monday afternoon for Laken Hope Riley, an Augusta University nursing student who was found dead after jogging on the University of Georgia campus last week, as her suspected killer’s immigration status has drawn the scrutiny of Republican leaders. Riley, who was a UGA student until May 2023, was found dead Thursday near a lake on the university’s campus from blunt force trauma, according to UGA Police Chief Jeff Clark. Riley’s killing has left the University of Georgia to grieve two tragic deaths that occurred less than a day apart: Her body was discovered just hours after the death of a UGA student the previous night. The Monday afternoon vigil will be co-hosted by Riley’s Alpha Chi Omega sorority at UGA in remembrance of both of the dead students, the university said. Clark referred to Riley’s killing as a “crime of opportunity,” noting he believes the suspect acted alone.

According to a 2019 report from American Express, Black women are the fastest growing demographic of entrepreneurs in the country. North Carolina Republican lawmakers voted to override the Democratic governor's vetoes on two election bills on Tuesday, giving themselves new power over election administration and shortening a key voting deadline ahead of the 2024 election. Currently, all election boards in the state are controlled by the governor's party, with nominations made by state parties and appointments made by the governor. "The legislative takeover of state and local elections boards could doom our state's elections to gridlock and severely limit early voting," Cooper said when he vetoed the bill. If county or state election boards do not approve early voting sites and schedules in accordance with state law, early voting can only take place at the county board of elections office. In populous counties, that could leave hundreds of thousands of voters with just one early voting option.

China risks Analysts have also noted Arm's limited control over its China joint venture, Arm China, which contributes 24% of revenue. "Plus, Arm can only sell to China customers via the Arm China channel, and they can offer competing product. With no direct stake in Arm China, they currently have very little control over their only means to sell in China." Valuation Analysts at New Constructs have also challenged Arm's valuation. Growth Analysts at Bernstein were also cautious, while expecting cloud, automotive, and mobile royalties to drive healthy top-line growth for Arm.

Kohl's shares spiked Wednesday as the struggling retailer posted a surprise profit and affirmed its full-year guidance while it chases a turnaround. Kohl's surprise quarterly profit comes after multiple quarters of disappointing sales and a sinking stock price. Since then, Kohl's has tapped its new CEO Kingsbury, former chief executive of off-price retailer Burlington Stores . That contributed to a big loss in Kohl's holiday quarter and weak outlook, which the Wisconsin-based company reiterated Wednesday. During the quarter, Kohl's had its strongest sales performance in February.
On top of the GOP gubernatorial primary in Kentucky, there are other contests taking place on Tuesday that could provide some clues about 2024 — even though it’s hard to draw too many lessons from individual races. Factbox: The 'Ndrangheta: Italy's most powerful mafia group
  + stars: | 2023-05-03 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +4 min
May 3 (Reuters) - Italy's 'Ndrangheta has supplanted Sicily's Cosa Nostra as the country's most powerful mafia organisation, and has spread across Europe and the rest of the world. ORIGIN, CELEBRITY KIDNAPPING AND COCAINEThe 'Ndrangheta originates from Calabria, the impoverished southern region at the tip of Italy's boot. Its name is believed to come from the ancient Greek words "andros" and "agathos", meaning brave or valiant man. POWER AND WEALTHIn its latest six-monthly report, Italy's Anti-Mafia Investigative Directorate (DIA) calls the 'Ndrangheta "the absolute dominant force in the criminal world" well beyond its home turf of Calabria. In 2008, Italian research group Eurispes valued the 'Ndrangheta's annual turnover at a staggering 44 billion euros ($48.54 billion), about 3% of Italy's gross domestic product at the time.
